DAILY SCHEDULE
Students in grades K-8 should arrive no earlier than 8:15 A.M. Homeroom begins each day at 8:20 A.M. Classes begin at 8:30 A.M. Student supervision begins at 8:10 A.M. Students arriving before this time must report to Morning Care. Students are dismissed at 3:00 P.M.
Students in preschool should arrive no sooner than 15 minutes prior to class. Parents should remain with their child/children until teacher supervision occurs.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Religion
As a parochial school, our primary purpose is to teach and pass on the basic truths of faith and Christian values. Hence, religious classes are considered of prime importance. All students attend religious classes and functions. Any student of another religious denomination is not required to be tested or graded in religion or participate in religious functions, if the parent so stipulates. However, this must be presented to the office in writing at the beginning of the school year.
Students prepare for participation in liturgies, para-liturgies, and religious services weekly throughout the year.
Sacramental Program
Students first receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist during the second grade. The reception of these sacraments is a total parish program. Therefore, the students of St. Patrick School and the CCD program are united in the preparation for the reception of sacraments. Some parent preparation is also required; parents will be given prior notification.
Mathematics
Mathematics, a major subject, is taught daily at all levels. The St. Patrick School mathematics program stresses the knowledge of the structure and patterns of math. Our aim is to train the student’s mind to reason, think logically, and work independently.
Language Arts
Language Arts consists of reading, English, spelling and handwriting. The object of Language Arts is to teach the child to think clearly, feel deeply, listen attentively, express oneself in both oral and written form, and to be able to read intelligently and respond wisely.
English
English is a major subject taught in all grades. Creative writing, expository writing, and grammar are the main components of the English program. It is our goal to help students write and speak effectively and confidently in a wide variety of everyday situations, and to promote personal growth through increasing mastery of the language.
Reading
Reading is given major emphasis throughout the school curriculum, particularly in the primary grades. It is a total language program that incorporates a strong phonetic base in the primary program.
At the upper elementary level, literature, music and social studies are correlated in a humanities approach to learning.
Spelling and Handwriting
Spelling is taught beginning in Kindergarten with emphasis on correct spelling, meaning of words, and proper usage. Handwriting skills are emphasized from Kindergarten through Grade 8 with aim toward legibility and neatness at all levels.
Science
Science, a major subject, is taught at all levels. Students learn the basic skills of science, discover the marvelous world God has created, and gain a further understanding of their relationship with the world around them.
Health
The health program provides an understanding of individual growth and teaches the importance of forming moral standards and values. The subject matter and methodology is geared to the student’s daily needs and problems.
Social Studies
Social studies is taught at all levels from the simplicity of “Community Helpers” to the more defined areas of history and geography, including economics, archeology, political science and sociology. The students learn more about others within a particular environment and from the examples set by events. A sense of personal involvement and sensitivity is developed to the needs of all mankind- all stressed within the framework of Christian values and faith.
Art and Music
The fine arts are a means of stimulating and developing creativity. The program provides experiences with a variety of media that develop the basic skills. Many of the skills learned in the fine arts can be used throughout life and in praise of the God who gave us these gifts.
Computer
Computer instruction is essential in today’s educational process. Instruction includes computer awareness and computer literacy. The curriculum focuses on those concepts, skills and objectives which appropriately fulfill the challenge of using the computer as a tool to handle information.
Physical Education
Physical development, coordination, stamina and basic skills are stressed. Competitive sports are introduced with emphasis on good sportsmanship, as well as winning. Each child from preschool to 8th grade will take physical education as a part of his/her regular schedule. Any student who needs to be exempt from physical education must have a written notice from a physician. Students will be graded for physical education.
Library
The school library is open daily and every class has a scheduled library period. The rules of the library are as follows:
Books are checked out for either one or two weeks. There will be a fine of ten cents per day, per book, for overdue books.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Reporting student progress to parents is one of the primary responsibilities of the school. Therefore, special times are scheduled each year:
Grades K-8- November and May
Preschool- February or early March
Kindergarten- A verbal report is given in November followed by scheduled written reports in January, March and June.
EXTENDED CARE PROGRAM
The school provides an Extended Care Program in our ½ day Kindergarten room for students enrolled in our school from 7:30 A.M. to 8:15 A.M. and from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. A modest fee is billed monthly and sent directly to your home. Payments are received at the school and the rectory.
